Rise of “Bite-Size Research” Worries Academics

Shorter attention spans and multi-tasking are a well known challenge in the world of consumer research. People don’t expect to read long questions or answer choices, or complex survey instructions:  online, people skim-read.

This lack of undivided attention among survey-takers has long been a problem in commercial research. Are shorter attention spans impacting serious academic research as well?

Two academics say that “in recent years a trend has emerged in the behavioral science toward shorter and more rapidly published journal articles.” The trend is towards “bite-size” articles which are easier to read.  Psychologists Marco Bertamini and Marcus Munafo view shorter word limits being imposed by academic journals and smaller acceptable study sizes as threats to good research.
